Most of the Smart phone these days are using some form of memory card (flash media) to store the data (pictures, videos, text messages, call logs etc.).

A more complex task is to recover from an internal flash chip, like the iPhones for example. In this case we are using special tools to unlock the phone and image the whole flash disk area as a raw image, them we run algorithms on the image to reconstruct lost data/files. This process is time consuming and much harder then the memory cards case.
